Join our monthly writing workshops where you can grow your craft, learn from industry experts and collaborate with peers. Alumni only.

Part 1: Mastering Rhythm and Timing

10/26 at Wanawari

Featured Teaching Artist: Yirim Seck

This session focuses on building a solid foundation in rhythm and timing. Participants will write lyrics to various click track tempos, practicing consistent timing and learning to stay on beat without a full instrumental. Exercises include timed writing drills and experimenting with pauses and pacing.

Attention Vocalist Alumni 16-24: Get help preparing for the next step in YOUR artistic journey! Strengthen your overall vocal ability and develop skills used by professional singers like:

Explore what it means to sing with confidence from the heart alongside Master Teacher: Erica Merritt. 4hrs per student offered on a rolling basis Oct-Dec 2024. Limited spots with both virtual and in-person options available now!

We’re proud to collaborate with Ruby Room to offer our alumni ages 16-24 an opportunity to record music in a professional studio, for FREE.

In line with our commitment to fostering community and fair access, preference will be given to those who have not had similar opportunities and collaborative projects (ie. alumni producer and vocalist). Sessions will run from June 3 - June 21.

Past Program Opportunities

 

The Residency’s ‘Cultivating Creativity in Web 3’ course is presented by The Residency in partnership with Microsoft for youth ages 16-19 with a desire to pursue a career in the music industry and a passion for innovation. This is a 6 week long program where youth students will learn about the history of Web 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and what these technological advancements mean for their future in the entertainment industry. 

The course will cover innovations in Mixed Reality, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, the Blockchain, Metaverse and NFT’s. 

Students will get to hear from music professionals spanning across management, agency, label, publishing and technology career paths while learning about the benefits, risks and emerging use cases for how industry leaders are thinking about Web 3 applications in their day to day. Students will also receive a $600 stipend for their attendance. Apply Here.

The Residency at Alan T. Sugiyama High School (ATS) at South Lake

April - June 2022 - The Residency is leading a class at ATS taught by Adeerya Johnson, who will guide students as they learn about exciting career opportunities available around archiving and documenting hip-hop. This class is available to high school students attending any Seattle Public Schools high school through ongoing, year-round cross-enrollment to gain credit toward graduation.

The Ruby Room Studio Sessions

March 2022 - The Ruby Room Sessions are an opportunity for Residency Alumni (2021 and 2020 cohorts only) to record music in a professional studio for free. Each participant can book up to two 2 hour sessions. These recording sessions will be in-person at the studio in Seattle, Washington (in SoDo).

March 2022 - This internship is an opportunity for two Residency alumni to gain hands-on experience working as an engineer in a professional recording studio environment with Elan Wright, the co-owner and co-founder of The Ruby Room.

This program is made possible by support from the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture, 4Culture, Sonos Foundation, and Alaska Airlines Foundation.

Writers Camp

July 2022 - The Residency is committed to supporting the future generation of artists to help them accelerate their careers. That is why we are excited to announce we are hosting this year's writers camp in beautiful Cannon Beach, Oregon, at no cost.

The Residency Writers Camp will split writers into groups to create multiple songs daily. Artist will engage in the collaborative songwriting process, recording, and learn about publishing and music credits. They will make their original songs during the program and there will be opportunities to showcase and perform their songs at shows throughout the year.

Facilitated by Sax G and DJ Sean Malik

The Ruby Room Sessions are an opportunity for young people between the ages of 16 and 24 to record music in a professional studio for free. These recordings will be IN-PERSON in Seattle, Washington. Although this is open to the public and all may apply, please note that space is limited, and enrollment will make a particular focus on our 2022 cohort. We are committed to practicing health & safety protocols pertaining to COVID-19 during these sessions. The deadline to apply is November 22nd, 2022. Apply Here.

The Residency Open Mic

Nov. 2021, March 2022, June 2022 - These open mics are a great opportunity and creative safe space for alumni to share their new music and make connections with alumni from other cohorts.

Dance Fitness with Leilani Pt. 2

August 28, 2021 - A one-hour fitness class live on Zoom with dance instructor, Leilani Farr. This people-inspired fitness program is a perfect blend of explosive dancing and boot camp-inspired toning.

Resilience College Scholarship Fund

Jan 31 - Feb 2, 2020 - Phoenix Rising is the concept we chose this year to symbolize rebirth and rejuvenation after constant, fear, doubt and opposition we consistently face as emerging artists. As we face these barriers, we are not overcome by them but challenged to rise above them. Facilitated by Master Teaching Artists Jace, Erica Merritt, and Sax G. This free opportunity is exclusively for Residency Alumni.

Hip Hop Camp 2019

Feb 1 - 3, 2019 - The Residency is offering an exclusive Hip Hop Writing Camp program at Centrum located in Port Townsend, WA. Resilience College Scholarship Fund

Winter Quarter - The goal of this scholarship fund is to create a pipeline to higher education for our alumni and break down the barriers that deny them access to becoming the future leaders of tomorrow. 7 Awards for Residency Alumni from $1,000 - $2,500 to use towards continuing their education. Residency Audio Engineering Internship

September 30, 2020 - This internship is an opportunity for Residency alumni to gain hands-on experience working as an engineer in a professional recording studio environment. The commitment will be 10 hours a week for 4 weeks (40 hours total).

The Career Cypher

May 2022 - Hip-Hop Education Center and The Residency have partnered to present The Career Cypher: A Guide to Independent Artists, a 6-week online workshop series designed for young artists to develop their own blueprint to launch creative projects with guidance from expert teaching artists and creative industry professionals. In each class, students will break down their goals into actionable steps. At the end of the workshop series, participants will leave with a blueprint that serves as a practical guide to help them make their creative dreams a reality.
